Feeding a busy family of seven including a husband and four hungry boys was often expensive. After complaining to my Grandmother one Saturday about how I worried my kids ate too much fast food and we spent to much at nicer restaurants, she said, "you just need to start doing things the old fashioned way". To which I curtly responded "sorry I don't have all day to sit at home and prepare dinner, unlike you I have a fulltime job and I have twice as many children as you did". She insisted it is ALWAYS cheaper and healthier to cook at home than eat out. Healthier maybe but for a busy family on the go could it be more cost effective? I could not get past the vision of the McDonalds $1 Menu flashing in my head, what could possibly be cheaper? What about the $5 Hot N Ready pizza's at Little Caesars Pizza? I mean these are staples in the diet of my children? Then I sat down and did the math. My two oldest sons are 19 and 16 both eat 3-4 double cheeseburgers or chicken sandwiches each trip to McDonalds and they each eat an ENTIRE pizza from Little Caesars. That is $10 just for the two of them each trip and the other five of us still have to eat we spent near $30 each trip for "fast food" and a sit down restaurant its more like $60-$70. Is it possible to create good home cooked dinners for a family of seven quickly and economically? You bet you can and even have restaurant quality meals at home!
Six Tips to get you started making cheap and easy family meals
When you first embark on "home cooking" you will probably have nothing in your cabinets, you will lack the basic on hand items that are staples of creating meals at home.. You may not even know where to start with meals planning so here are a few tips to get your started
1.) It is not necessary to buy name brand on most products! Especially when it comes to things like butter, vegetable oil, flour, baking soda, sugar, salt, milk and eggs. The store brands will save you money and I promise the only difference you will see is in how much money you spend.
2.) Use the internet, there are numerous depositories of FREE recipes online, although it has been my experience that the FREE ones aren't always the best ones, amateurs leave out steps sometimes unintentionally that can make all the difference in the world try inexpensive e-cook books. Links to two of my favorites are included later on below.
3.) Check food packages for recipes, many items have recipes on the package that are quick and easy for families on the go. (Soup Cans are a great place to start!
4.) Find a good place to start with meal planning. Probably the very best source for realistic simple recipes I have come across is the Devotional Cafe! I have boys that aren't neccesarily adventurous eaters but every recipe I have ever tried from the Devotional Cafe! has been a hit. BBQ Skillet Dinner and Cheeseburger Casserole are two of their favorites. Check the site I believe you can still get the ebook at no cost.
The absolute best and largest collection of electronic cookbooks I have found is at Artful Cooking! a lot of work has gone into the collection and presentation of these ebooks easy to follow and great food you can find a recipe for anything you can imagine at this one place, its fantastic!
5.) Once your confident you can pull a few meals together its time to plan. Planning what you will prepare for each meal in a week, ahead of time is the key to saving $$$
6.) Make only ONE trip to the grocery each week. This might take some time to perfect but I in fact have it down to visting the grocery just three times a month. This helps you avoid the "Walmart Effect" you go to buy a loaf of bread and end up spending $50 (haven't we all fell victim that at one time or another?)
Finally, trimming back your families meal budget and preparing healthier meals cooked at home doesn't mean giving up quality nor does it mean you have to slave away in the kitchen for hours on end. With just a little research and some recipe help you can be on your way to extra money and a healthier family!
Need to Easily Make Fast Chinese Food? by Tristan Lum
1. Use common ingredients as substitute for hard-to-find ingredients. Some Asian foods may not be available in your local grocery store. You may substitute other foods when cooking your meals. If you need Asparagus in your dish, you can substitute broccoli, string beans, and other green vegetables. Another example would be substitution for black mushrooms. You can use fresh American mushrooms.
2. Buy food ingredients in larger quantity. A) Buy a whole chicken. Remove the bones or debone the chicken and use the bones for soup stock. Use the chicken meat for your Chinese dishes to be stir fried with vegetables for your refrigerator. B) Another technique is to buy a fresh fish like walleye or tilapia. Remove the bones from the fish known as filleting the fish. Save the bones for soup stock and use the fillet part of the fish for stir frying. As you can see there are numerous ways, use food when buying in bulk.
3. Make several meals from bulk purchase. For the chicken that is not used in your large quantity purchase, keep it in an aluminum foil, and place in the freezer for your next meal. For a fast and easily thawing technique, place the aluminum foil with fish between two pieces of meat.
4. Use leftover food for your meals. If you could a Chinese vegetable dish for the previous night, you can easily as some noodles or rice to make it meal one day or two later. Or, you may a few pieces of steak with some spices to give your new meal a bit more flavor. I would advise using food as meal if it's been there for several weeks since you may get ill from eating it.
5. Make some quick bites if you're really pressed for time. Buy some frozen steam buns from the store. It comes in a variety of flavors from red bean paste, black bean paste, and chicken or meat filling. Steam a few extra buns for breakfast and leave a few cooked one in the refrigerator. Microwave the steam buns for an afternoon or evening snack.
6. Save energy and fuel by using your equipment efficiently. When you're steaming those buns, you can use the other layers of the steamer to steam other food items too. Most good steamers have two or three levels to steam food. Buy a three level steamer if plan buy one. You can steam a variety of food for your meals like meats, vegetables, and even cooked rice.
7. Prepare sauces in advance. Put your favorite sauces together in a jar, and store them for later use. We have a 12 oz. jar of black bean sauce, but put it away in the refrigerator to store away for up to 3 weeks. When we need that right flavor in our meals, we take a few teaspoons and put in right into our wok. We're ready with our meals within minutes.

Some of the meanings of these powerful words will be unfolded later, In the meantime, as all things are subject to law, let us observe a number of the general conditions to three-fold health, that of body, mind and the inner self, regarding their totality as the atmosphere, so to speak, in which courage most easily and perfectly thrives.
Fear in man is a result of repeated suggestion, to which low health-tone is a natural invitation. Health is the primary tonic against fear. Perfect physical health is mere strength. Perfect mental health is mere brain sanity. Perfect soul-health is the whole of the man at his best. When the body is buoyant, the mind clear and inspired, the soul harmonic with all existence rightly in the universe, then is the impulse of fear easily mastered and the habit of fear finds no encouragement. There are, indeed, courageous invalids who have not come into the secret of right thought so far as health is concerned, and fearing atheltes and scholars who have neglected the secret of courage, and timorous saints who have failed to possess themselves of the confidence of goodness. Nevertheless, the eternal law is evident that the one great enemy of fear is The White Life in Harmonic Mind in Buoyant Body.
A person who affirms and realizes these conditions must, in the nature of things, be possessed of perfect health. In the tone of such health courage is inevitable.
That you may come to this ideal, you are invited to observe the following instructions. Health is a trinity, and we may begin our studies with its natural basis:

The word "tone" means, "sound in relation to volume, quality, duration and pitch," then, "peculiar characteristic sound as of a voice or instrument," then, "characteristic style or tendency, predominating aim or character, tenor, strain, spirit."
Hence, in the sense of health, tone signifies "the state of tension or firmness proper to the tissues of the body; the state in which all the parts and organs have due tension or are well strung; the strength and activity of the organs on which healthy functions depend; that state of the body in which all the normal functions are performed with healthy vigor".
We thus see that health-tone involves the whole personality, physical, mental and moral.
But the truth of the matter hides in a deeper region than that of mere material flesh or organ. Matter is a form of the Universal Ether, so far as science seems to declare, or, at least, matter presupposes the ether in a state of vibration. Your body is a "field" in which etheric vibrations are constantly taking place. All its reality and all its activities involve such vibrations. The brain, regarded as the organ of conscious life, of thought and feeling, and the entire nervous system, involve such vibrations. And as your thought and feeling constitute the foundation of your moral character, the latter also becomes a matter of movements in the ether.
In the case of heat, light, electricity, etc., differing kinds of such vibrations determine the kinds of phenomena. We may say, then, that there is one general kind of ether-movement for matter, and another for thought and feeling, and another for the moral life. Each individual, however, presents variations of these general kinds of vibrations, a particular variation for his body, and for his mental person, and for his right or wrong self-spirit. We individualize the ether, Or, we are individualized as we use the ether.
The tone of a person's health is determined by the state of the etheric movements characteristic to himself.
If the vibrations underlying the body life are full and harmonious according to their individual character for a person, his organs are all sound and active. He possesses physical tone. If there is a similar fullness and harmony within his mental life, he must exhibit health of mind. If a corresponding condition obtains in the moral personality, the highest health of the deeper self prevails.
Start Preparing For Labour in the 34th Week of Pregnancy by Tong Lin
It is recommended that you start perineal massages in your 34th week. There are two different ways in which you can conduct this massage. You can have a professional therapist give you the massage but due to the part of the body involved most women prefer to take care of this themselves or to have their partner assist them with it. You will need some form of lubricant, such as olive oil, KY jelly, cocoa butter or ordinary vegetable oil. Find a comfortable and private place in your home for your massage so that you won be interrupted.
First of all make sure you wash your hands and then coat them with the lubricant you choose to use. Place your thumbs about an inch inside the vagina and then press downwards and to the sides at the same time. You should keep gently stretching until you feel a slight burning or tingling sensation. Hold the pressure for a few minutes or longer as long as you can stand the sensation. After a while the area will feel a little numb.
While you keep applying the pressure with your thumbs, gently massage the lower section of your vagina working the lubricant into the tissues in the area. Repeat this motion for three or four minutes. While you are giving yourself this type of massage, you have to take care that you avoid the urinary area because you could get an infection from the lubricant. Pull outward on the lower part of the vagina while you massage the area. This will help to stretch the skin so it will be easier for the baby head to slip out during birth. You can do this massage once or twice a day from now until you go into labour.
Research has shown that women who do perform a perineal massage starting in week 34 of their pregnancy still have the perineum intact after the delivery. This is especially true for those giving birth for the first time.
This type of massage does not do any harm to the baby because you are not in contact with the cervix or the birth canal. What helps the mother relax also relaxes the baby, so you may find that the baby movements slow down somewhat during the massage. You can set a particular time of day for your massage, such as just after you get out of the shower or just before you go to bed at night.

Dutch Potato Salad Recipe by Hadrian
- 8 boiled potatoes
- 1 stalk celery diced
- 2 hard cooked eggs sliced
- 1 onion minced
- 1 T minced parsley
- 2 eggs well beaten
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup cider vinegar diluted with
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1/4 tsp. dry mustard
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 4 slices bacon
Boil potatoes in their jackets. When soft, peel and dice. (I leave skins on) Add celery, hard cooked eggs and onion. Fry bacon in skillet until crisp & brown. (Do not drain) Beat the eggs, add the sugar, spices, vinegar and water. Mix well. Pour the egg mixture into the hot bacon and fat and stir until mixture thickens. (abou 10 mins.) Pour over potatoes and stir to mix well. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight stirring once or twice. Part of this recipe we also use for hot bacon dressing that you can use to pour over lettuce for a hot salad.
